The Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance has been awarded since 1990. Each year the U.S. National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences selects several nominees for “artistic achievement, technical excellence, and significant contribution to the development of the recording industry without regard to album (single) sales and chart position”. Winners over the years have included Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Ozzy Osbourne, Motörhead, Slipknot, Slayer, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth and others.

American prog-metallists Dream Theater won the Best Metal Performance 2022 category. The band was nominated with “The Alien” from their 2021 album “A View From The Top Of The World.”
